Play Learn Guitar

Here’s a stupid question but I figured I better ask…

Why do you want to learn guitar?

You’ve probably got a list of reasons – so did I. One thing that certainly wasn’t on my list was practicing chord changes, learning scales and studying boring theory…

When you concentrate too much on those things, sometimes it feels like you’re not really playing the guitar at all – you are what a friend of mine used to say – playing learn guitar…

Huh?

What the heck does ‘play learn guitar‘ mean?

OK, so when you ‘play learn guitar‘ you never really enjoy what you’re doing.

Picking up the guitar becomes all about practicing the latest chords, newest scale or learning the best techniques.

The sense of enjoyment and fun is not there. Playing guitar becomes about learning and reaching an unattainable goal…

What unattainable goal?

You can never be the perfect guitarist

There is no such thing and if you spent every waking minute from now on learning you still wouldn’t be the perfect guitarist. There is always one step further up along the metaphorical guitar ladder…

There is no end to it – so if there is no destination you damn well better enjoy the journey…

What do I mean?

Playing and learning guitar are the same thing. If you are doing one you have to be doing the other. There are like ying and yang, Lennon and McCarthy

Now fair enough there will be times when you put a bit more effort into getting the hang of a new technique but you will only truly master that technique when you use it to express yourself playing songs.

So that’s my daily rant. Don’t ‘play learn guitar‘ – just play it
