Learn Lead Guitar Improvisation
Most guitarists learn to play lead guitar through repetition and imitation. They spend many frustrating hours learning and playing the solos and riffs of their heroes and eventually they learn to improvise.
But is this the most effective way to learn lead guitar improvisation?
Well, yes and no.
See learning to play great riffs and solos is a necessary step for any guitarists. If you ever want to be great you have to play like the greats.
There are ways to speed up you learning though.
Instead of just playing guitar solos and riffs constantly it is important to take the time to practice, learn some scales and get a feel for the structure of music. When you do this you will have a greater understanding of why your favourite guitarists played a particular note.

Excellent Post. Sometime as guitarists we spend way too much time having fun and not enough time learning theory and technique. It is very important to take time out to practice what some of us may consider to be the “boring” stuff. It will pay off in the long run.
I found your blog is really good, thanks for your advices. I agree with these advice and look forward to more such advices.
Like the article said, take some time to learn some scales. For beginners, try starting out by learning Blues pentatonic scale. It is one of the easiest and most commonly played scales. And if you can’t play blues, you basically can’t play any solos with feelings.
Yep, learning riffs by themselves is pretty useless in the long run. I always tell everyone to not just learn the riff, but whats behind it as well (scale, key, etc.).

Very true! Unlike what too many people believe, improvisation is not the simple act of randomly hitting any note on a musical instrument. If that was the case, anyone could have improvised like a pro. In order to avoid a chaotic improvisation, you have to learn the basics, as they are usually played while focusing on a specific scale.
Dude,
Right on. The best way I learned was first to learn some scales, then I closed my eyes and played the same scales, then I turned on some jams and literally jammed until my fingers hurt.
And it wasn’t all in one day either.
