Learn Guitar Tremolo Basics

For many guitarists the tremolo is the technique that is most rewarding to play. It is also the technique that many find most difficult to master. However, if you are willing to spend some time perfecting it, it will be a fantastic addition to your repertoire.

In a standard tremolo, the same string is plucked several times in a row using different fingers on the right hand.

To start off use just the ring (r), middle (m), and index (i) fingers. Hit the base note with the thumb, then hit the string with the ring, middle and index one after the other.

Try to ensure that each finger produces a clear note. It does not matter how slowly you have to do this at the start as long as the technique is correct. Make sure the time intervals between notes are equal. The smooth motion should come from the knuckles of the fingers rather than the middle. It is a rolling motion. Practice this over and over until you know longer have to concentrate on each finger, but rather the tremolo hand motion becomes natural.
