How To Use Damping To Play John Lennons Version of Stand By Me

Here’s a video I did months ago when I was a bit You Tube shy. I don’t even think I can get into the account anymore.

Anyway the video’s short, but I think it gets the information across. It’s just a simple tutorial on how to play the percussive effect that John Lennon used when he played Stand By Me.

Most of the videos on You Tube play Ben E Kings version, an easy bass riff, but if you want to play the song and sing along I think this version is better. It’s really easy and uses only four chords, but the big bonus is that once you understand how damping works you can add it to other songs too.

I’ve found it works really well for very fast rock songs that are played with power chords. Instead of the power chords finger full barre chords and strum with this staccato effect to get a very cool acoustic guitar rock sound.

Try it for songs like Get off of my cloud by the Stones or Smell like teen spirit by Nirvana. The technique sounds great with the Pixies Debaser also.
