very helpful and impressive post. I was really having trouble holding a pick. i used to hold a pick with my fingertips and now i know, dat was da reason i find it hard alternate picking. Hope dis way of holding pick will help me big time…

Excellent advice. I held the pick with my fingertip for years, not knowing its disadvantages. I straightened myself out a while back and wrote about it on my guitar blogs. Nice point on the uneven pick wear too. In my early days, I used the opposite angle, wearing my one favorite pick down to half its original mass. Had to give it up when I switched.

A friend of mine said that also the angle we hold the guitar pick is important. Is this true?

I used to clench my fist when I first held the guitar pick, but I’ve noticed how my strumming and picking is much easier…

… and I don’t appear to get as many cramps in my hand. haha
