		<description>I think typically most beginner books teach to keep your thumb about midway on the neck simply to get beginners to have good technique or something to build off of. But you are completely right, many good guitarists will put the palm of their hand on the back of the neck, especially as one poster mentioned above, to mute the low E string. Yes that is one thing you can do, but you can also use your thumb to reach over the top of the neck and actually press a note on that low E string to add extra flavor to a chord. Like a say adding an extra F# to a simple open D chord.</description>
