Guitar Strumming Lesson No. 2

| Down up – Down up – Down up – Down up | | Down up – Down up – Down up – Down up |

Once you’ve mastered the simple four beats to a bar, the next pattern you need to learn is again four beats to a bar. This guitar strumming pattern is four beats long, and contains 8 strums.

For each beat you need to play a downwards stroke (1/2 beat) followed by an upwards stroke (1/2 beat). When you are just starting off it is best to make the downwards stroke and the upwards strokes equal, even though this is generally never done in practice.

Notice that the pattern starts with a down stroke, and ends with an upstroke. If you play the pattern twice, your hand wouldn’t have to vary from it’s continual down-up motion.

Again play the pattern at first with just the E chord then move on to changing regularly between the E chord and D chord. Try and make the transition between chords as smooth as possible without losing beat (keeping the beat is the most important thing!).

Hope this helps you get started. I’ll write a post about chord changing and the more complex strumming patterns as soon as I can.
