If you have learned to play a few songs on your guitar, you probably think that the original artist simply picked a handful of chords out of thin air, and put them together to form a song.
This is not the case. There are actually a finite number of possible guitar chord progressions that can be played, and almost every guitar chord progression has been re-used many times over.
This is good news if you want to write your own songs. Using some simple theory you can work out the guitar chords that sound best together.
